Why there is no single answer

Any answer invites another “why?” (“please God” → which God? → why that one?). The chain never bottoms out — it dead-ends in one of the three ways of Agrippa’s trilemma.
No single answer is the good news. If there were one, we would not be free — we’d all be forced to live to it, “Borg-like robots” competing to fulfill it better than each other (back to status signaling). Because there’s no answer, you get to make up your own.

Ancient vs. modern

Ancient struggle — tribal. You had a tribe, religion, country, loyalty, nationality. That gave you meaning and support; you struggled against other tribes.
Modern struggle — atomized. Modern life is enormously free: you live alone, family and friends far away, religion and country optional. Wonderful — but when something comes to attack you, you stand alone and can’t resist.
