An ancient result in epistemology (also called the Münchhausen trilemma): any attempt to justify a claim by asking “why?” repeatedly can only terminate in one of three unsatisfying ways. Naval uses it to explain why the meaning of life has no answer.

The three dead ends

Infinite regress — every reason needs a further reason, forever (why A? because B; why B? because C; …).
Circular reasoning — the chain loops back on itself (A because B, and B because A).
Axiom — you simply stop at an unproven foundation and declare it true.

The axioms are interchangeable

The most popular axiom is God, but “because math,” “because science,” “because the Big Bang,” or “because we’re in a simulation” are the same move — just stopping points. In Naval’s words, saying simulation or Big Bang is “just another way of saying God”; God is only a dirtier word now, so we use it less. Every foundation is a chosen place to stop asking.
