The Knowledge Project.

The three styles

Takers — “What can you do for me?” Maximize their own outcome, do the
minimum, chase visible projects. People don’t like working with them, and their
choices are suboptimal for the group.

Givers — “What can I do for you?” Go the extra mile; without them
organizations fail. But unstrategic giving leads to burnout and fatigue.

Matchers — trade evenly, keep a mental ledger of debits and credits. Feels
fair but transactional; optimizes for the short term. Most people default
here.

The twist

Givers sit at both extremes — they either completely fail or win biggest.
The difference isn’t whether they give, it’s how:

Tactical empathy

Negotiation as applied listening. Tactical empathy is recognizing the other
side’s perspective and vocalizing that recognition — “listening as a martial
art” (Chris Voss, Never Split the Difference).

Why it works

Decisions are made by emotion, then rationalized. System 1 (fast, emotional)
steers System 2 (slow, logical) — so if you shape how someone feels, you shape
what they conclude (Never Split the Difference).
People who can’t feel (brain-damage studies) literally can’t decide.

Time-blocking & focus

How to actually get the important thing done. The core move: decide in advance
what deserves your attention, instead of reacting to whatever’s next.

Time-blocking

Cal Newport (Productivity):

Context switching kills productivity.

Plan quarterly → weekly → daily; block the day in advance. “Don’t just do
what’s next.”

Deadlines work, but time-blocking works better — a block is just “this is
what I want to do now.”

The honest caveat (from the same note): constant “you’re late” reminders
create anxiety, and some flexibility is valuable. The tension between structure
and flex is real and unresolved — hold both.
